This afternoon I spoke with my parents who just arrived in Mercedes, TX (near McAllen) which is only 15 miles from the Mexican border at the tip of TX. They reported seeing streams of monarchs, often gliding only 2'-4' off the ground, mostly coming from the west (thanks Gail & NM). Unfortunately some were struck by vehicles. Mom estimated there were 5/minute on average.
Once arriving to Mercedes, she discovered FOUR 4th's on the tropical milkweed at their winter home.
In the 12 years they've returned to overwinter in southern TX, this is the first time they've seen monarchs travelling south in noticeable numbers.
