Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 11/30/2014

Number: 1

The little hummer is still here and I can hardly believe it. We have kept the hummingbird food at 3 cups water to 1 cup sugar and change it twice a week. I also have a radiant lamp on the feeder now as I can't imagine him surviving unless there is some heat for him. We keep the heat on all day until night fall and take the food in for the night. We put it out at daybreak and supply the heat. He shows up about an hour after daybreak and drinks like there is no tomorrow. He stays around all day sitting in the trees with the chickadees. I am very concerned about him as it plummeted to minus 17 degrees Celcius the other night and I was so sure he wouldn't be alive come morning, but he showed up. minus 17 Celcius is not the coldest it can get here, so I am really hoping he decides to leave and head for the coast. There will be no way of knowing if he survived if he just doesn't show up but I am hoping his instincts to fly to where it is warmer kicks in this week. If anyone has any ideas of how I may help him any further, please let me know what your idea is. I'm willing to try almost anything to make sure he survives the winter. One of us is always home, so that the sugar water is always warm. Don't know if we can keep this up for long.
