Visited my son, his wife and 2 week old baby granddaughter on Jan 3/15 at their newly purchased home. It was the 1st time I had been there. I was surprised to see a group of hummingbirds flitting about the area. The area is south facing and is a local Gary Oak ecosystem/subdivision about 75 feet in elevation. Their sloping yard abuts a large vacant lot filled with wild shrubs and blackberry overlooking the valley. They had 2 feeders on their 2 story high deck and the next door neighbour had one as well. One of the feeders was within 12 inches of the window so I had a good view of the critters as they came unafraid to the window. I saw 2 males and 1 female. They were in good shape and had lots of energy as they darted about. We have been getting down 0C to -6C in December but generally it is a milder winter. We can get down to -10C to -12C for a few days during an artic outflow. The Annas seem to be able to take these occasional cold overnite temps. My son has lived in this neighbourhood for 6-8+ years and has noticed the Annas over the past few years.
