Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 02/05/2015

Number: 1000

After sunrise about 7:30am through 9:00am today, Thursday, 5Feb2015, saw wave after wave of soaring, darting Red Breasted Robins. They were flying just above the 70ft. tree tops, due north 3 blocks parallel to the coast(3rd Street & Cedar St. Neptune Beach, Fl) into a headwind of about 8-10mph with gusts out of Mayport,Fl. on the St. John's river. They struck-out from trees as I first noticed them and seemed to come in groups of 75 birds continuously for nearly an hour. Then as their numbers dwindled, they continued a steady stream of smaller waves of about 40 birds per group. This was still happening as I left the area about 10am.
I noticed their wing strokes of about 3,4 or 5 beats and a swooping glide as the motion repeated. Buffeting wind caused them to swoop, then climb 10-20ft. across 30yards of distance. While most were larger adults, also noticed younger, smaller juveniles flew in tight groups of 6-12 birds(as there were predator hawks/eagles on lamp posts).
