Ever since we bought our house several years ago we have been replacing turf grass with native flowers and shrubs. Our yard is now both an NWF Habitat and Monarch Waystation. We have a wide variety of flowers to attract birds, butterflies, and other insects. In addition to flower, we also have clumps of native tall grasses to provide shelter. Incorporated into our 'wild' area is a rain garden to collect roof runoff and help with water conservation.
It's been amazing to watch the transformation of a lifeless patch of lawn into an area alive with insect and animal activity. Now I can go out, sit on the garden bench, and enjoy the singing of crickets while watching the activity of humming birds, butterflies, and dragonflies.
