This morning, in -5F, at about 8:00 a.m. I observed a female (I think, due to some lighter streaking on the wing edges), Cowbird at my hanging feeder off the deck. It was actually sitting in the feeder, so to cover it's feet and legs for warmth, and was all fluffed up while trying to eat the seeds that are provided out there for all the birds.
I was so surprised to see her here so early in the frigid temperatures that we have had and are continuing, I went and got my binoculars to verify, and yes, it was indeed a Cowbird. I hope she doesn't freeze to death waiting for our projected, cold Spring.
It really seems quite early as yet, to see them arriving, but I'm not an expert, perhaps this is normal.
