Bald Eagle

Date: 02/22/2015

Number: 1

On Sunday mid morning, we were traveling north on FM 1381 approxamatly 3 miles north of the rural community of Ashwood, Texas (there is an old tree, Pecan I believe on the right side of the road) we identified a juvenile Bald Eagle. I say juvenile because there were still small white blotches on its chest. We were able to get within 30 yards of the bird and took several photographs with a quality 35mm camera. I will have to upload the picture later as I do not have access as of this writing. The sighting absolutely surprised me. I grew up in this part of Texas and have always been an outdoor person but in all the years I was in this area I had never seen or heard about Eagles being there. I now live in North Texas just outside of Dallas and have observed Eagles at Lake Texoma mainly in the winter months. To have seen on this far south is amazing and tells me the environment have greatly improved over the last 35 years since I have moved north.
