It was a single, very large monarch butterfly observed on tropical milkweed at a middle school school garden. Due to the security fence, we could not approach it to sex it, but could clearly identify it through binoculars. It was bright and untattered, so it was probably not a migrant.
I've seen monarchs all winter long here in the Rockport, Texas (coast, north of Corpus Christi). I saw one yesterday, March 14. I think it most likely to be one of our locals, not a migrant., even though it was heading north at a good clip. I could not see if it was tattered or not.
