It is going to be a warm day here in Chandler, so I stepped out to water early as the sun rose. As I gentle showered water on milkweed seedlings, I spotted a flutter of orange drop to the ground. This old, worn male spent the night holding on to a young milkweed. He's very old, unlike the new monarchs in the area that are now eclosing. Most of the monarchs that spent the winter have moved on. Is this possible it is a remigrant? The earliest I've seen them here is March 20, but this is certainly in the time range. Earlier this week wind maps had winds blowing from the area of Mexico just south of Texas our way until it turns favorable to Texas now for the rest of the week.
It's always hard for us since we get monarchs from both CA and MX here in the Spring. But I do know there were not any in Baja this winter that were sighted.
