Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/17/2015

Number: 1

Today on Desertleps@yahoo.com Ken Davenport, a highly experienced and well known lepidopterist based in Bakersfield, California reported: "Monarch (Danaus plexippus): 5 or 6 at Ant Canyon on the steep slopes where a few milkweeds were growing. Larvae have been found on these plants at this site in the past." Ant Canyon is about 7 miles north of the town of Kernville and at about 3,300 feet elevation. Asclepias californica grows in the Kernville area and it is the only one that emerges from the ground in mid-March so presumably that is the species Ken observed the monarchs flying around.
