Saw three sandhill cranes sliding on the frozen but watery ice of a small, private lake. Have been visiting this lake summers every year of my life since 1969, but have never seen sandhill cranes there. (Have never been there in March before, however, so not sure if the birds are new to the area at that time of year.) They took off, calling their eerie call, flew together in formation, banked, came back and landed on lake again. Not sure how long they will remain.
