Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/28/2015

Number: 1

Warm, sunny day with a brisk southwest wind. Temperatures in the mid 70s. About 5pm. The monarch drifted up across our south meadow relatively low, crossed over our front lawn, then rose up and over the trees along our north property line, disappearing to the northeast. I had to run to follow it from a distance. We saw no others. This is the earliest we've seen migrating monarchs in over a decade. It's the first spring we've spotted a monarch on the farm BEFORE we've seen the first hummingbird.

Editor's Note: Texas butterfly expert Mike Quinn commented: "This monarch almost surely from the Texas overwintering population, not from central Mexico. This location is almost due north of the large Houston population, where many monarchs overwintered. Also, first sightings from central Mexico are only now (as of March 30 ) being reported the Rio Grande Valley.
