Ice out on White Bear Lake! Two large flocks of sandhill cranes flying overhead. Ah, spring!
Wind, rain and 80-degree temps took care of the remaining ice in St. Germaine bay near the Dellwood peninsula. White Bear ice-out historian Jan K declared the lake ice free April 2, three weeks ahead of last year.
Jan has recorded ice-out dates since 2001, taking over for longtime recorder and barber Benny S. Mean ice-out date is April 15. The latest record is May 4, set in 1950. The earliest date was set in 2012 when the lake was ice-free March 19.
