It has been two weeks since we have been out to our garden because we were away on spring break. Today the air temperature was 43 degrees F and the soil temperature was 40 degrees F. About half of our tulip bulbs have started to emerge from the soil. The other second grade classes’ bulbs have emerged even more than ours. Theirs were taller and green. Ours ranged in height from ½ cm – 4 cm and are redish, brown. We noticed that our bulbs are close to a gutter and we’re wondering if the soil by our bulbs is too muddy. We are worried about the rain that is forecast for this week because the soil already seems pretty damp. The soil looks cracked and damp (which seems unusual because dry soil usually looks cracked, not damp). We are curious about which parts of the garden are sunny and shady and how that might affect the growth of our tulips, but today it was overcast and so we could not tell.
Last time we went out, we removed the net from our part of the garden. We had used the net to prevent the squirrels from digging up our bulbs. We noticed that another second grade class did not remove their net, and the tulips are trying to push through the net and it doesn’t seem like it is good for the plants.
We saw some purple crocus bulbs that had already bloomed. We saw the outside skin of a tulip sitting on top of the soil. We also found a very interesting seedpod, which we brought inside to investigate further. We noticed other tulip bulbs growing and they might have been leftover bulbs that were planted last year. We pulled them out and took them inside to investigate further. One of the trees near our garden is starting to bud. We did not see any worms or squirrels in the garden today.
