Monarchs, pasture DeWitt Co TX 4/7/15
We did a deliberate count of Monarchs flying generally
north thru the pasture yesterday (Mon Apr 6, 15) from
ten in the morning until six in the afternoon with an
hour off for lunch: 7 hours ... 35 monarchs
The researcher from the UofGA captured twelve Monarchs
the past two days. I viewed one very, very faded and tattered
Monarch and two that were very faded. Most of them had some
fade but none were new or close to new. I was actually
a bit surprised at their generally good shape as I have
been in years past of most of the remigrants. A few eggs
were being deposited, esp today, a few small larvae found.
The amount and quality of the A. asperula is fantastic.
We found one plant that had thirty-three blooms ... they
all "appeared" to be coming from the same root stock. We
found a plant of A. viridiflora, missing from the pasture
for four years. The quantity and variety of wildflowers
in the pasture is the best in possibility a decade ... oh,
what some rain at the right time will do. Found some asperula
seed pods deveoloping today.
Ptly cloudy to sunny, mid 80's, wind SSE 20-25.
A fun few days ... Monarchs ... wildflowers ... milkweed ...
