At the Hermann Park Conservancy, between 12:45-1:30, it was mostly overcast. During occasional sunshine breaks, we saw at least a dozen monarchs sipping nectar. The butterflies had their choice of many red, yellow and white flowers but we observed the monarchs only nectaring from the purple flowers. Often another insect was close by the monarch and would pre-empt the monarch in landing on the flower and the monarch would fly away. The monarchs seemed to close their wings and hold on tightly during some breezes and sometimes, flew away. We saw several pairs mating. The butterflies were intact, faded but still colorful.
