Well, I've run out of room for any new shrubs or trees so am now concentrating on adding native wildflowers and grasses to the existing flora in the back lot, now dubbed a meadow. New species include: Indian Paintbrush, Mexican Hat, Showy Milkweed, Joe Pye Weed, Blue Flax, Penstemons, Sagebrush, Buckwheat, Globe Mallow, Wine Cups, Golden Crownbeard, Purple and White Prairie Clover, Indian Blanket, Asters, Butterfly Weed, Narrow-leaf Coneflower, Bee Plant, Monarda, Sideoats Grama, Big Bluestem, Blue Grama and more. Winter-sowing in a cold frame has been a great way to start plants for the meadow/gardens and the plan is to keep adding species until I run out of room....LOL. I've also increased the size of the milkweed patches and have Swamp Milkweed planted at the front of my flower gardens in the backyard. Keeping them pruned will provide fresh growth for the Monarchs and the milkweed will be backed up by favored nectar plants for hungry butterflies and other pollinators.
