Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 04/30/2015

Number: 4

Observed 4 Ruby Throated Hummingbirds on two of my Red Buckeye trees going to town drinking nectar from the flowers. These trees are always extremely popular with my hummers while they are blooming. I have three mature trees but can only see two simultaneously. I have some year old seedlings that I will be moving to suitable sites to increase the nectar available. The Red Buckeyes are early bloomers that have hummer type flowers. I have also observed the hummers on some pink petunia hanging baskets I have up. In addition they are visiting the red columbines in my flower beds. (Also hitting the feeder--they are chasing each other around it.)

Red Buckeyes are small trees (mine are under 25 ft tall and over 30 years old) that will fit in suburban yards. You do need to keep them watered when it is dry. They will take some afternoon shade but need at least 6 hours of full sun to bloom well. I highly recommend them for attracting hummingbirds in the spring.
