Bald Eagle

Date: 04/30/2015

Number: 1

Sighted 5 bald eagles simultaneously today....over the last 30 plus years this is the most birds seen at once. Two adults and three immatures all soaring over my bank overlooking the Potomac River. Over the last 10 years I have occasionally seen as many as 4 birds (usually in the summer when the young fledge and it is the adult pair with their young.)Last year my nearby resident eagles only produced one eaglet so this was not a family group. The adults did see the immatures out of the immediate area after a few minutes. It was a fairly perfuntory chase.
Fifty years ago sightings of adult eagles were quite rare here and young eagles were virtually unknown. (Eggs collapsed due to DDT.) The birds began having a little success breeding about 35 years ago. Now, provided their nesting area is not disturbed, the local eagles successfully breed every year. Yay!
