Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/01/2015

Number: 1

First sighting of a hummingbird at our feeders. Average size male fed from feeder beside patio, flew into tree next to patio and then returned to our second feeder 20 feet away. He spent a long time drinking, eventually flying southward toward backyard hedge row. The time was 8:15 pm and the temperature was 65 degrees. The high temperature for the day was 74 degrees with more of the same temperatures expected for the next several days. Night time temperatures expected to be in the mid to high 40's for the next several days. Mostly bulb flowers in bloom at the time, along with the fruit trees, crab trees, flowering almond, magnolia and a few salvia we started early in the hot bed and already transplanted in the landscape. There are also numerous flying insects and spiders to be found. This sighting was fairly consistent with our sightings from the past five years of between April 30th thru May 2nd.
