Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/04/2015

Number: 2

11:38 AM, 68.9 degrees, sunshine following morning rain--2 boys appeared at the traditional Perky Pet feeder, and continue to perch and feed. There are presently 5 feeders in the habitat, with tomato red plastic bags flying from 8 foot poles in elevated pots. In the 20 plus years that we've hosted hummingbirds, the earliest arrival has been May 1st and the latest arrivals were May 8th. The guys are continuing their tradition of the first week in May, and we are thrilled to welcome them home. Blossums are minimal due to the cold wet spring--available today: daffodils, Dicentria luxuriant, dogwood, pansies, Cordaylis. Our feeders are always filled 2 weeks prior to the week of May 1st. Monitored, cleaned and often used by woodpeckers before the Hummers arrive. "Welcome Home Guys, may 'Your Season' begin, we're glad you made the long, arduous, journey safely and amazed at your dedication and endurance."
