ur first 1st Generation Monarchs eclosed this morning……4 of them…..that we will release tomorrow
They were found on native asperula in a field 2 lots down from our house the 1st weekend of April
There are many more that will eclose over the next several days
We are still seeing Monarchs in the surrounding fields and on our lot. They are mostly males from their behavior and the pictures we have taken. They are primarily nectaring and patrolling the fields and staying very active…in spite of some wing wear and tear. The last female Monarch we saw was last Thursday (4/30/15) in our front yard nectaring on prairie verbeena. She was flying low and not very fast from flower to flower….and appeared to have wing damage. She was around for about an hour and then disappeared…but I was able to get a picture of her (below).
The weather has been sunny and warm with good southerly breezes….rains forecast for most of next week. The fields are teeming with butterflies and bees…..a great spring. Milkweed still doing great….another round of fresh plants is emerging now.
So far the aphids have been tolerable….and hopefully they will not affect the seed production. Hoping the spring conditions north of us will be as rewarding as what we’ve seen in Texas.
