Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/04/2015

Number: 2

Frist males (2) sighted. First male at 7:46 - fed easily and heavily at first feeder approached until the second male arrived at 7:47. This one couldn't find its way to the openings of the first two feeders approached, finding success at feeder #3. He drank heavily, flew to a nearby branch* then rested for more than 3 minutes and flew back to the feeder, feeding heavily. He went back to the branch, rested for 2+ minutes and then began preening. He rested there for more than a total of 7 minutes. He returned to the feeder two more times! I wouldn't have believed that that tiny little guy could drink so much. He spent a lot of time resting and preening until it was nearly quite dark. He then flew up, perhaps to roost over night in the large apple tree next to the portch. The total time observed was just over 19 minutes. (* I have dead branches tied to the porch to provide close by perches and this one seemed to really need them!) This was an amazing experience for me!
