Put out two feeders 5/04 as I'd seen reports of hummers in southern VT. Today at 3:45 was surprised to see first male, not "Mikey" our resident alpha male (very distinctive) but perhaps the son of Mikey. At 4:08 a slight male visited the feeder, and hovered while drinking (like one particular bird did last year) rather than resting on the perch-ring so it may have been a second one. This feeder is in a protected spot not far from the kitchen sink window behind the house so it attracts birds who have been here before. Plenty of dead branches to perch on. The second feeder is out in the open in an old plum tree, but saw neither bird there. By the end of the summer I had six feeders out to handle the population. This is earlier than usual, most years it's been 5/9.
