The first monarchs of the season came roaring into town early in the afternoon of May 21. The first of five was spotted at 2:13 p.m. about 300 feet east of the intersection of State Avenue and Meadow Glen Road in southwest Ames, Iowa, flying NNE across a grassy strip, over a hedge row, and away over a cornfield. Temperature was about 75 F under a mostly sunny sky and a strong west wind of 20 mph.
