Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/22/2015

Number: 1

Three 3rd grade students at Forest Knolls Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland were playing on our playground when one of them spotted a monarch at 4:20 PM. They were so excited and they eagerly burst into my classroom to share this wonderful news so we could report it. This is the first monarch that any of us (students and staff) have seen this spring. We were quite worried because we haven't seen any monarchs. On Monday, May 18, 2015 our 4th grade students visited Patuxent Wildlife Refuge in Laurel, Maryland. We didn't see any butterflies, bees, or other insects in the butterfly garden. We asked the education specialist, Dennis Hartnett, if anyone at Patuxent had sighted monarchs and he told us that no one had reported sighting a monarch. He mentioned that he was concerned because he thought monarchs would have been sighted in the garden at this time. We are over joyed to report that our 3rd grade Journey North students had the thrill of reporting our first sighting at Forest Knolls Elementary School.
