The baltimore orielles return each year to the Westside of Stamford. I grew up on 4 acres in north stamford with avid bird- loving parents and had NEVER seen one. Amazingly, when I moved 'downtown' (south) into a highly populated area of the city near Stamford Hospital (closer to the beach), I have Baltimore Orieles that have nested and returned each year for almost 10 years (that I have noticed - they are very shy).Could not understand why such a shy, rare bird would choose such a populated area but then I figured it out. The westside of stamford was settled and lived in exclusively by Italians for almost 100 years. The Italian families have moved on but most of the backyards still have homemade grape arbors. Our yard still has the old fig, peach, plum, cherry trees too on less than an acre lot. What a gift to see!
