At one-thirty this afternoon I was watching an
almost grey butterfly in the backyard that was
flying very much like a monarch. I rolled to the
back door and picture windows, looked out onto the back
deck and watched this monarch female that had quite
a bit of color missing. The thing was that for
the next hour she visited almost every one of our
young A. asperula plants out on the deck that Altus
has been caring for with such intensity. Her
faded areas were missing great amounts of scales but
this is not uniform as in the remigrants we see in
late March and April ... there is a bit of trailing
edge tatter. The two weeks of rain storms along with
some possible hail and high winds may have caused the
interesting faded areas. In the worst of faded areas
it was as if wax paper was all that was left. Now
I'm not sure what to do if there actually are any eggs
... don't really want to loose any of these plants, they
are supposed to replant some areas in the pasture where
a pipe line went thru ... oh, well!
