With a friend, we counted 128 monarch caterpillars on 6/22/15. The sightings were on our woodland property at three locations in close proximity to each other. Roughly one acre combined. The most activity was on disturbed ground, such as our lanes, which eliminated competition from grasses, goldenrod, etc. The caterpillars ranged from very tiny to medium size, approximately .25" to 1.25". Some of the heavily chewed plants were vacated. We also saw four adult butterflies in the same area.
