Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/23/2015

Number: 1

Spotted 12 first and second instar larvae on eastern purple milkweed (A. purpurescens) plants in our flowerbeds. I had expected to find larvae on native showy milkweed down in the valley where I have seen a couple of males patrolling, but to date have not found any there. Our home is 15-30 miles north of these patches, and 1000 feet up on a forested mountainside. The nearest patch of native milkweed is 5 miles away. I've never considered the possibility that they could actually find my flowerbeds, but I'm humbled again by these wonderful creatures! Now I'm off to find some more, down where they should be.
