Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/23/2015

Number: 1

Ellie spotted a fifth instar on the neighbor's milkweed, and we later spotted one second instar, and two fourth instars on the common milkweed plants in our own yard just out the front door. The fifth instar pupated this afternoon (6/25), while the other three have also significantly grown. (All were taken inside as heavy rainstorm was predicted and we hadn't raised any for awhile!) This seems like the first time in several years that we have found larvae so readily on our own plants. Could this signify a good year for the upcoming migrating population? I hope so!
Recent weather has been near normal temps with adequate rainfall. All is green and I haven't had to water anything yet this spring or summer!
