We saw two monarch larvae, each on a different milkweed plant (both plants A speciosa) in a patch growing along the side of a gravel road in hard, dry, clay soil next to a cultivated field. The caterpillars were about ten feet from each other and actively feeding on large blooming plants. We looked carefully but not meticulously and saw only these two caterpillars in this stand of milkweed. This was about 11AM, in hot dry overcast weather. They were about the same size, probably fifth instar? or fourth; I am unfamiliar with them and haven't taken the time to determine which, but the images should be helpful.
