Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/09/2015

Number: 12

Big milkweed patch, dozens of monarchs flying around..beautiful. The field is probably 20 acres with about three or four big milkweed patches and single plants scattered around. When I stopped on the road there were two along side it. I looked out across the field and saw them flying around all over.

Despite the unusually large number, I can confirm they are monarchs. are monarchs. I've been monitoring a milkweed patch here in town for the last couple weeks. Getting a little worried that I didn't see a single one. Today I drove a few miles east of town to look at a building, I was surprised at the amount of milkweed growing in the ditches. I stopped where there were  a couple monarchs feeding on the milkweed flowers, looked out at the adjoining field (looked like CRP) They were flying all over the place in a big milkweed patch. I am 61 years old and have always enjoyed the monarchs, in the past I have had them spend the day in my back yard in the fall. Use to be maybe 100 or so last year about 10.
