Second sighting of the season. Based on its behavior I suspect it was a male. I watched him patrol a giant milkweed patch with hundreds and hundreds of plants. He flitted and floated back and forth without ever stopping to nectar -- or to lay eggs as a female would. I first saw him at 11 am; when I came back at 4 he (presumably) was still there. With monarchs so scarce I wonder if it's hard to find a mate...
