For a month I have been looking for monarch butterflies at two monarch fields near my rural home. I have had no luck. On July 13, I looked again. The same result - no monarch adult or caterpillar. The weather for June was chilly and rainy. I Have been worried that the migration has been stalled in this area. Then around 8:30 PM as I walked by the swamp milkweed I planted in spring 2014, I saw a monarch caterpillar eating a flower bud on one of the plants. Words cannot express my joy! I did not think that my small patch of swamp milkweed would attract a monarch butterfly because the of its small size and tucked away location. I almost did not check the leaves closely! I've learned my lesson to pay attention even to a small patch of milkweed.
I will be presenting an insect program on July 16 to a group of children and adults and, of course, I will talk about the monarchs and show this caterpillar.
