Big day at the feeders. In addition to our 5 females and two males, a large black bear showed up and stole the bird's feeder! He bent their crozier over, sat down and drank from the feeder. Then he took the feeder off the hook altogether and walked away with it, like a guy with a thermos heading off to work! Our hummingbirds were yelling and chirping the whole time about this big hairy hummingbird wannabe.
This was at 8 AM.
In general we have at least 7 birds, including the male who arrived on May 1. He has a remarkably dark head. It looks almost black, until the light hits him and you see his blaze. Everybody is very busy and they fight all day over the feeders like little Jedi warriors. This year we have observed the birds eating three and four together at a time at one feeder however, which they rarely did in the past. They are much bolder this year and seem to recognize that we bring the feed out. They hover by the window looking inside when we bring the feeder in to refill it. They've gone through several, bags of sugar.
