Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/14/2015

Number: 1

My family and I took the scenic drive through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. At lookout point 10, I was checking the milkweed for evidence of monarch activity and spotted terminal frass on a plant. I looked at the plant more closely, and found the monarch hidden in the uppermost bloom of the plant. A beautiful, fat 5th instar. The plant it was on was protected from the wind. It was cold--blustery winds with high of only 74F. Locals tell me it has been a cool summer. Not good for the monarchs. And I hate having to wear my winter coat in summer!
