Two adult Monarchs sighted taking nectar and floating in and around a large patch of tropical milkweed in my yard. These are the first sighted this season. On July 7 I found 11 large caterpillars in the milkweed and within a couple of days, the 9 largest were gone, the other 2 kept eating for a few more days. I wonder if these adults are from the earlier caterpillars? I observed the Monarchs more than an hour as they went from patch to patch of blooming milkweed. Unlike other butterflies that nectar at the milkweed (Laurel and Tiger Swallowtails), the Monarchs spent a lot of time exploring the foliage besides nectaring.
