Late July Update for Northwest Wisconsin:
Checked the big lake farm on Tuesday.....lots of monarch activity there, including a couple of mating pairs and egg laying females. Caterpillars continue to be difficult to find.
Growth of milkweed cut around July1 continues good.......lots of new green plants for females to lay eggs on. Goldenrod not blooming yet but coneflowers and brown eyed susans beautiful still.
Here in the hollow, the back hill and our garden areas continue to have lots of flying males, and a few females laying eggs. Lots and lots of milkweed eaten where the new larvae have hatched.....a few half leaves eaten, but most caterpillar sightings have been 1st and 2nd instars....
Swede Lake patch is showing the best success. Right on the edge of the lake, there are lots of milkweeds being eaten, and a variety of instar caterpillars....could be six to a dozen caterpillars there.
Weather continues in the 80s....humid air has been replaced with strong breezes and dry air........
I wish I was seeing more caterpillars and not just eaten leaves, but I remain hopeful for big numbers a month from now.
