Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/30/2015

Number: 5

Horticulture staff reported 5 5th instar monarch caterpillars feeding on butterflyweed [Asclepias tuberosa] in the Virginia Garden at the Virginia Living Museum. The photo uploaded was taken later in the same afternoon of the sighting. This bodes well for our monarch season, since we haven't usually found caterpillars this early for many years. These monarchs, if they grow to adulthood, will be the parents of the migrating generation!
