Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 08/03/2015

Number: 1

We have been finding larva for the past 10 days in varying states of development from first instar to final instar on our property and the fringes of the neighbouring properties including the soybean field. My intention was to leave them to develop on their own but I noticed we were not seeing any chrysalids and the final instar caterpillars just seemed to vanish. While my son and I were out on our daily Monarch hike we witnessed 2 black and yellow wasps (similar to yellow jackets) eating a final instar. I immediately removed a leaf from that plant which had another final instar on it and another one very close by. We are now raising them. One assumed a J shape 08/04 in the evening. When I went out 08/04 to the same milkweed patch the wasp had another final instar. I collected 2 more final instars and captured the wasp. When I picked my son up from his youth program at Ojibway Nature Centre in Windsor later that day I left the wasp with them for identification.
