Monarchs were on the Blazing star this weekend and their pace was much less frantic than 2 weeks ago. I would see 3, 4 or 5 in a small area, more than my previous visit. I suspect these are the parents of the migrating Monarchs, have propagated and are just living out their days. The next few weeks will tell all as to how successful the Monarchs were on our farm this summer. The habitat and weather has been ideal, milkweed, season long wildflowers and heavy native grass cover. I remain optimistic for our part of the world at least. Our grassland is part of a larger, contiguous grassland complex with virtually no disturbance. Areas like these can produce large numbers of Monarchs given a good returning population.
