Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/11/2015

Number: 7

Have 3 adult male ruby throats, 1 immature male ruby-throat and 3 female ruby-throated hummers. Males are feeding almost exclusively on nectar feeders. Females are mostly feeding on Black & Blue salvias, Wendy's Wish salvias, red and purple flox, and bee balm. 1 female has been challenging the immature male at his feeder. He often tolerates letting her feed for a little bit then chases her off. Lots more activity at feeders at this point. In June, July they were feeding mostly on flowers and ignoring the feeders. Am refreshing nectar more often than past years and using feeders with bee guards or have a deeper bowl or not filling as much so bees can't reach nectar. This seems to have really reduced the bee problem. At least one female this summer was nesting near our house. Not sure I ever saw her little ones tho. Hope they made it. Evening roosting time is already noticeably shorter, around 8:35 p.m vs around 9:20 p.m in early July.
