Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/09/2015

Number: 6

No way to know how many monarch butterflies are on our farm. The most we've seen at one time is 6, nectaring on zinnias and swamp milkweed. We have seen dozens of caterpillars and eggs, and are currently raising 20 in captivity. Our certified organic farm has hundreds of milkweed plants, both common and swamp. There must be hundreds of eggs and caterpillars, as many times when we harvest milkweed to feed the captive caterpillars, we inadvertently bring in eggs or teeny caterpillars. There seems to be a huge number of eggs/larva compared to the number of adults we see. This is our first year of monitoring, so we don't know if it is a typical year or not.
