I was deadheading my buddlias and watering my butterfly gardens in the early evening. I have a patch of common milkweed in a separate are and haven't see any females monarchs in the garden for about a month. But I had telltale holes on a number of leaves that indicated monarch larva. No eggs had been found after daily checking for the past two monts. I was just about to water the milkweed to keep it fresh, when I spotted a third instar monarch larva just under new leaves at the top of one of the plants! First sighting this year. I collected it at 7:30 pm EST and it is now being reared in a breeding cage. Lots of predators on the milkweeds including, a wasp, earwigs, ladybugs, crab spiders and ants all present. Hoping to find more larva and eggs and start to see monarchs nectaring in the gardens starting soom. I would like to see more reports for MA. Scarce here again this year unfortunately.
