The Healing Power of Hummingbirds
Last year, when I became gravel ill, a friend (a retired clergyman) brightened up my convalescence with a delightful book, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey, in which the author, struck down by a mysterious disease, tells of the solace she found in the company of wild snail she kept in a bedside terrarium. The book arrived at a critical time, cheering me when I worried about ever healing from a big ulcer on my right foot, amidst talk of not only amputating my foot, but also of taking off my right leg below the knee. I had no snail for succor, but the hummingbirds outside my window cheered me up and helped the healing. Fortunately a dedicated surgeon was able to heal me--but the hummingbirds did their share, too.
