Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/21/2015

Number: 6

3 adult ruby-throats, 2 females and 1 other either female or immature male were really busy this evening. Saw all 6 at once so pretty sure of the count. Could have 7 or 8 since I couldn't see front yard feeders where another male or two are always hanging around. Males are keeping the females from approaching the nectar feeders most of the time. So the females feed frequently on the Black & Blue salvias, and Wendy's Wish salvias. Prior to today had rain for two days in a row. 2nd day I noticed hummers wouldn't use one of the feeders. So either the nectar got diluted or there was mold I couldn't see. Brought it in and cleaned it with bleach. Put it back out and the hummers started hitting it right away. Rainy cloudy nights the hummers went to roost a little before or after 8 pm. This evening was clear so they stuck around longer until about 8:20 pm. Male and female orioles are migrating through and feeding happily. They seem to keep the bees down too.
