Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 08/21/2015

Number: 6

At our farm, we are seeing increasing numbers of ruby-throated hummingbirds, including males. We have large numbers of nectar-producing flowers including turk's cap, sage, catnip, rose of Sharon, and honeysuckle. We also supplement with feeders. Our birds are presently consuming about 56 ounces per day. We do not believe the migration has started in our area. We believe the daily increase in numbers is due to several factors: 1) present drought conditions in our area, 2) a very successful nesting year, 3) our natural food supply, water, absence of chemicals, and shelter, attracting birds from neighboring properties. Number sighted is the number of males sighted in one hour this morning visiting any of 12 feeders; we undoubtedly missed a few.
