Hello bird people, hope you are doing well in journey north land. There have been a lot of monarchs through here in the last couple of weeks. Some very worn, tattered and faded, others as bright as a new penny. It's been an even balance of males and females. We have the greatest number of butterflies in August and September which co-insides with peak migration.
The monarchs come in ones, twos, and threes. In all the years I've lived here I have never seen a large flock of monarchs. They are nectaring on lady in red salvia, bind weed, buddleja, marigolds, zinnias, and mealy salvia. I grew common milkweed from seed but as it doesn't bloom the first year they weren't interested. Another one just flew by. That makes three so far today (8/24). As to the weather it has rained regularly but mostly at night. The days have been warm and sunny.
