Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/27/2015

Number: 27

After seeing 3 monarchs traveling in directional flight in the city of Manitowoc, I decided it was time to check the West of the Lake Gardens along Lake Michigan. At first I watched 7 monarchs nectaring. Within a 30 minute period, I was surrounded by 20 more monarchs as they seemed to fly in from Lake Michigan to nectar in these fabulous gardens. The wind on shore was non-existent, but according to radar, there was a slight 6mph northerly wind on the lake. This location is known to host numerous monarchs as they prepare for migration. In the last few years the numbers decreased significantly, but I plan to visit often to survey the population in the next few weeks. I am hopeful that the numbers will be larger than in previous years.
